Doll Bases from Scratch

Page 4 - Coloring

Ok, we've got our general figure completed, it's time to add color and depth!

Let's duplicate this layer and select the darkest color in your flesh palette. Recolor the outline with that.

Now fill your base with the fourth color from the left ( also known as the second lightest color ^_~ )

At this point we are going to start shading the base. So get your wand tool, and select all of the filled areas of the base. Do not select the outline!

I always hide my marquee tool, so I can see what I am doing...

If, at this point, I've lost you between selecting multiple areas, hiding marquee tools etc.. then I really suggest doing the first complete doll tutorial. The one I suggest doing first on the tutorial page ^_~

Anyhoo, so hide your marquee and select the third color from the left on your palette. Add a new layer, and we will begin shading:

I usually start shading around the rib/breast area. With this color you will want to make large masses of shadow. I never concern myself too too much with direction of light, since all of my bases are publicly released, and the person that uses them may choose to create the light in a different direction. So I usually just shade as if the light is subtle, coming slightly downward.

Each area of shading.

Shading the face REALLY defines it. You can set off high cheekbones, a pointed nose, a wider nose, or deepset eyes with shading... I stayed pretty basic above. More shading will probably be added later once we start on the detail work.

I've added more shadow under the breasts, around the bottom of the breasts. You will want to make the inside of the arms more shaded than the outside, since the inside is shadowed by the breasts.

The inner thighs should be shaded heavily since this is an area overshadowed by the upper thigh in the front.

Knees protrude a bit, so make sure to add a bit of shadow beneath them.

Feet are difficult to get right at times. Remember to add small bits of shading where the foot naturally recedes and between the toes. The shading between the toes is basically just an indicator as we will be going over that with a different color later.

So we've got the base shadow down. Lets add a new layer grab the second darkest color and lay in some of the darker shadows. These will be in smaller masses ^_~

Now as I look at this at 100% zoom, I realize I need to lay in more of the lighter shading. So I go back to the layer of lighter shadow and add more around the breasts, on the feet, arms, along the length of the legs, below her knees and around her eyes..

Now go to the darker shadow layer, and touch up any areas that look off to you. For me, that area between her breasts, looks off. So I'm going to fix that, and the inside of her elbows...

Before shading touch ups >> Added more lighter shadow >> Added more darker shadow..

One more round of the close ups of the shading

Now we will add a new layer and use the lightest color to add some lights.

I personally feel like the lights on this base are way too dramatic, so the first thing I'm going to try to do to repair this is replace that lightest color with a slightly darker color.

Less dramatic >> More dramatic

It's time to start detailing.. And a new page!
